The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments. FSSAI has been created for laying down science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. The Act also aims to establish a single reference point for all matters relating to food safety and standards, by moving from multi- level, multi- departmental control to a single line of command. To this effect, the Act establishes an independent statutory Authority – the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India with head office at Delhi. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the State Food Safety Authorities shall enforce various provisions of the Act.
An FSSAI Registration License is issued by the Central governments to those operating food businesses within an Indian state and have an expected/actual turnover more than Rs 20 Crores.
An FSSAI Registration License is issued by the state governments to those operating food businesses within an Indian state and has an expected/actual turnover less than Rs 12Lakhs.
An FSSAI State license is issued by the state governments to those operating food businesses within an Indian state and have an expected/actual turnover between Rs 12Lakhs to Rs 20 Crores.
Do business in India legally, High degree of consumer confidence in quality & safety of food, acts as a secondary entity proof & can avoid penal consequence of imprisonment for 6 months or fine up to Rs.10 Lakhs.
The import/export of food products into India is controlled by the FSSAI. The FSSAI standards have to be met while importing or exporting food products. FSSAI Import/Export License is mandatory to carry on the business.
Eligible Food Business Operators (FBO) like importers, 100 EoUs, manufacturers, operators in central government, agencies, airports, seaports, etc. need to take a license from the Central Authority.
Check the eligibility and category criteria to understand the type of Registration/License to be obtained. Apply by filling in the prescribed application form with all the details as required by the authority and submit.
A reference number gets generated once the form is submitted and is used to track progress of registration.
The payment of prescribed fees has to be done & the documents must be submitted to the authorities physically.
Upon verification, the authority will issue the FSSAI licence.
