Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a ten-digit alphanumeric number, issued in the form of a laminated card, by the Income Tax Department, to any “person” who applies for it or to whom the department allots the number without an application. It is a necessary legal document not only for the individuals, but also for a company to carry business here in India. Any corporate body which is carrying on businesses in India, whether registered in India or in any foreign country, will need to have a PAN number.
Following forms have been notified for submitting applications to allot PAN:
FORM 49A: – To be filled by Indian citizens including those who are located outside India.
FORM 49AA: – To be filled by foreign citizens.
Mandatory to trade immovable properties, to make a deposit exceeding Rs. 50,000 and many more such transactions.
It is required to produce a photocopy of PAN card while applying for a new bank account.
The PAN card carries your photograph, name and date of birth & serves as a nationally accepted proof of identity.

PAN helps you to keep track of your taxes. By logging into Income Tax Department website with your PAN, you can know the status of your Taxes.
PAN can be obtained in 15 working days from the time of submission of application with the required documents.
Fill the appropriate online form and select payment mode to complete the form submission.
On successful submission of online application and payment (for online mode of payment), an Acknowledgement receipt is generated.
Save and take a print out of the acknowledgement receipt.

The 15 digit acknowledgement number appearing on the acknowledgement receipt can be used for tracking status of application.
